- A usual dose for Lorazepam depends on what is it prescribed for and mainly of age of the patients. It also depends if it is administered orally or IV (usually in case of hospitalization or when quicker results are needed).
For agitation in the intensive care unit, for adult patients, doses are usually
- Intravenous, from time to time: Starting dosage should be from one to four milligrams intravenous every ten to twenty minutes, for managing momenta agitation. Then the dose should be adjusted to one to four milligrams intravenous administered every two to four hours, it can be adjusted later to maintain the wanted level of sedation.
- Intravenous, unceasing direct infusion: anywhere from 0.01 to 0.1 milligrams per kilogram of body mass per hour intravenous if wanted to keep the wanted effect of patient sedation.
- Note: Infusions with strong doses (strong is considered anything over 18 milligrams per hour for more than four weeks) can be connected with cases of lactic acidosis, tubular necrosis and in some cases hyperosmolalty.
For treatment of Anxiety in adults recommended doses are
- Intravenous: starting IV dose is two milligrams or 0.044 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, usually the smaller of those two are recommended.
- Orally the starting dosage should be one milligram two to three times every day. Then the dose should be modified to one to two milligrams preferably two to three times per day. Total daily dose can go from one to ten milligrams per day.
For treatment of Insomnia in adults usually dose of two to four milligrams orally before sleeping.
If wanted to achieve light anesthetic effects as premedication doses would be
- Intravenous two milligrams total, or as mentioned 0.044 milligrams per kilogram of body mass, depending of which is lower.
- Intramuscular 0.05 milligrams per kilogram of body mass not over exceeding the total value of four milligrams.
In case of vomiting and nausea adult dosage would be orally or intravenous half a milligram to maximum two milligrams ever four to six hours.
In case of epileptic seizures, normal dose in adults is four milligrams slow drip intravenous for a period of two to five minutes (not faster than two milligrams every minute), this can be administered again in ten to fifteen minutes, and total dose should not exceed eight milligrams.
